Parent Involvement, Staff Development, and Youth Leadership Training
Description:

An interactive multicultural education workshop that uses cultural heritage in promoting Reading, Writing, Math, History, Art, Music, and Dance. The program focuses on teaching families to value their culture as positive resources to motivate their children to achieve SUCCESS in school. Cultural customs and traditions of Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Africa, and the United States are used to teach "best practices" to motivate children to learn at home by using family and cultural activities. The workshop highlights the importance of parent participation in their children's education, instilling cultural pride and increasing self-esteem.


STAFF DEVELOPMENT (4 hours). -Addresses “best practices” for understanding the crucial role youth cultural heritage and diversity play in working with multicultural high-risk youth in our community.

Participants Will:

  • Learn "best practices" to increase student's academic success using cultural projects

  • Teach math skills in the kitchen while cooking

  • Promote writing by creating a family cultural booklet (values, stories, & "dichos" (proverbs)

  • Motivate student's learning and increase self-esteem by using Art (painting cultural murals, mask making,etc.)

  • Promote reading at home (stories from Latin American and African cultures)

  • Promote parental involvement and parent leadership in school

  • Learn about Latin America cultural heritage and their cultural bonds with Indigenous, European and African Cultures


Program Details:

Dates:  September 1-December 15 and January 15-May 30

Times:  Open – After School and Weekend

Duration:   4.0 hrs each session

School Fee:  $1,200 for one staff development session

Attendance Minimum:  10

Attendance Maximum:  30

Bilingual Presentation:  Yes

Technical Needs:  DVD Player Overhead Projector, Tables for Displays

Other Info:  Parents may bring preschool children. Assistance is provided in developing fliers and promoting the program in school
